(Everybody sing) Love, Love, Love

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This day is something, isn’t it?

Some love it. – It’s like their own personal Hallmark movie. They’re in love with love and love to show it.

Some hate it. – It’s nothing but a made up holiday, and they refuse to feel obligated to show love on command.

Some enjoy it. – It’s nothing more than a fun day to share some love with people they care about, not just their sweetheart.

It pains some. – It feels like a holiday created to highlight their loneliness.

An author friend of mine posted on her Facebook page, “Valentine’s Day. Yay or nay?” She got quite the range of responses. My favorite was this: “If you see it as a time to express love to others, it’s almost always great. If you see it as a time to receive love from others, it almost always disappoints.”

Whatever your feelings about this day, one thing I know for sure is that if we’re balanced on the inside and comfortable within ourselves, this holiday can hold a healthy place in our life. That doesn’t mean that we’ll choose to make a big deal of it or necessarily celebrate it at all. What it means is that February 14th can come around on our calendar without causing us stress.

We get to decide what place it has in our lives – not the florists, or jewelers, or greeting card or candy companies, or anyone else.

It’s a day devoted to love. Let’s pause for a few minutes today to notice and appreciate all the love we have in our lives and how it shows up. Then let’s share that love however we can.

Love truly is the most powerful force in the world. Let’s tap into that power and intentionally choose how we’ll lighten those within our circle of influence. As we do, we can more easily feel the peace, comfort, and confidence that come from realizing that the abundance of light and love available from its Source is ample enough to fill us to overflowing and we can trust that no matter how much we give away we can always be full.

The words of the wise Charles M. Schultz tie together the big picture and small details of this day.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.

This day is yours to do with as you will. I invite you to find joy in it.
