One Tool for Breaking the Scale's Hold Over Us

A quick post for those who are still emotionally or habitually dependent on weighing themselves frequently - and by frequently I mean more than once a quarter. I get it, I do. We've been conditioned to obsess about the number on the scale. I written about this before HERE and HERE, if you want to read more. For now, let's just say there's way too much psychological baggage attached to that one measurement.

Today's tool can help us break free from the scale's hold on us. Don't worry. Even if you're concerned about how to track your progress toward weight loss or monitor yourself to keep from gaining weight, the fit of your clothes will give you plenty of info for that.

So, if you want to take back your personal power from the scale, try this. On a day when you'll be mostly at home. Weigh yourself a ridiculous number of times. -

first thing in the morning

after going to the bathroom

after getting dressed

after breakfast

before and after exercising

before and after any time you change your clothes

before and after lunch

before and after drinking a glass of water

a couple of hours after lunch

before and after dinner

just before bed

Why?

To plant the seed in your brain of how fluid that number is so that idea can begin to loosen the grip the number has on you. Even if you know this intellectually, seeing the number on the scale change moment by moment, hour by hour will speak to you on a different level.

If you think you weigh 150, seeing it fluctuate from 148-155 in one day (which isn't improbable), can give you an impression you won't soon forget. A number that changes so quickly can hardly be a firm foundation for anything.

We've been trained to think of our weight as the most, or at least one of the most important indicators of our health. It may be one, but it's only one, and it's way down the list. Let's put it where it belongs and take back our power.
