Before You Set Goals for 2025, Ask This One Question

Hello January! As the New Year begins, many of us feel the pull to set goals, make resolutions, and map out our plans for the year ahead. But what if there’s a better way to begin? What if, instead of focusing on what you want to do, you started by asking a deeper, more transformative question: Who do I want to be?

This one question can redefine how you approach your year—shifting your focus from achieving to becoming. It’s a chance to move beyond surface-level resolutions and connect with your true identity.

Inspired by Reflection

If you’ve ever watched Disney’s Mulan, you might recall the poignant lyrics of “Reflection”:

Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me?Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?

This song captures the tension so many of us feel—the struggle between who we are and who we’re trying to be. The New Year is a perfect time to examine your own reflection and realign with who you truly want to be, not who others expect you to be.

The Power of Identity-Driven Goals

Traditional goal-setting often begins with external achievements: lose weight, save money, or get a promotion. While these goals can be valuable, they’re often disconnected from our core values and identity. That’s where identity-driven goals make all the difference.

Instead of starting with what you want to do, begin with who you want to become. For example:

  • Rather than saying, “I want to exercise more,” you might say, “I want to be someone who prioritizes health and joyful movement.”

  • Instead of, “I want to save money,” you could decide, “I want to be a wise and intentional steward of my resources.”

When you align your goals with your desired identity, your actions become more purposeful and fulfilling.

Rooted in Faith

As a faith-based coach, I believe this process goes beyond self-improvement. It’s about discovering who God created you to be. The Bible tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and understanding our identity as beloved children of God is foundational to living a meaningful life.

By starting with your God-given identity, you can approach your goals with clarity and peace. Instead of striving for perfection, you’ll find yourself walking in alignment with your divine purpose.

A Practical Path to Self-Discovery

To begin this journey, try these three steps:

  1. Reflect on Who You Are Today

    • What do you value most? What parts of your character do you want to nurture? Take time to journal or pray about your current identity.

  2. Visualize Your Future Self

    • Picture the person you want to be by the end of this year. What qualities define her? What does her life look like?

  3. Create Your "Who Statement"

    • Write a statement that captures the essence of who you want to be. For example:

      • “I am a woman who lives with courage, compassion, and trust in God.”

      • “I am a woman who trusts God and cares for her body with gratitude.”
