Did Your Parents Ever Tell You to Be Still? It Turns Out They Were Onto Something.

I know, I know. You're probably aware that taking time to be still - resting our minds, bodies, and spirits - is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. The science behind this is compelling.

But that doesn't always make it easy to practice.

The good news is that you don't need to trek out into the woods and sit in quiet contemplation next to a babbling stream, as lovely as that might be. You don't even need to set aside 15-30 minutes for daily meditation. While those are great options, if they're practical for you, even just a moment of stillness can help you claim some of the benefits of slowing down. We talk more about that in THIS short podcast episode.

Let's look at a few ways being still can benefit us.

  1. Mental Clarity: Resting the mind allows it to recharge and regain focus. Just like a muscle, the brain needs time to recover from periods of activity. When we rest our minds through activities like meditation or simply taking breaks, we can think more clearly and make better decisions.

  2. Stress Reduction: Resting helps to lower stress levels. Continuous stress can lead to various health issues, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. Taking time to relax and unwind allows the body to release tension and counteract the harmful effects of stress hormones like cortisol.

  3. Enhanced Creativity: Resting stimulates creativity. When the mind is constantly engaged, it can become difficult to think outside the box or come up with innovative ideas. Giving our minds a break allows for new connections to form and for creative inspiration to flourish.

  4. Improved Physical Health: Resting the body is essential for physical recovery and repair. During rest periods, the body can heal from injuries, replenish energy stores, and strengthen the immune system. Adequate rest also contributes to better sleep quality, which is crucial for overall health and well-being.

  5. Emotional Balance: Resting the spirit promotes emotional well-being. Engaging in activities that nourish the soul, such as spending time in nature, practicing gratitude, or connecting with loved ones, can help foster a sense of inner peace and contentment.

  6. Increased Productivity: Contrary to popular belief, taking breaks actually boosts productivity. When we give ourselves permission to rest, we return to tasks with renewed energy and focus, allowing us to work more efficiently and effectively.

  7. Longevity: Research suggests that chronic stress and lack of rest can accelerate the aging process and increase the risk of chronic diseases. By prioritizing rest and relaxation, we can support longevity and overall vitality.
