Let's Talk Turkey: Tips for Navigating Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and let's face it, as much as we might love it, it can be a bit tricky. Between all the food, our expectations of what we think Thanksgiving "should" look like, and dealing with all the people (or lack of people) around the table, the day can get complicated.

Here are some Thanksgiving tips with you in mind:

WITH FOOD - Engage Your Senses and Savor the Moment.

For many, Thanksgiving is one day of the year to throw all their usual food rules out the window. Hooray! But then, after gorging themselves on all the deliciousness, the discomfort sets in - physical and emotional. There's a better way! Instead of eating with reckless abandon, how about if, when the Thanksgiving feast is spread before you, you take a moment to savor it with all your senses? The delightful aroma, the vibrant colors, the textures – they're all part of the experience. Mindful eating can turn your meal into a joyous event without the need or desire to overeat. Try savoring each bite, and let it be a moment of pleasure and nourishment.

WITH PEOPLE AND TRADITIONS - Manage Your Expectations.

We've all been there, feeling the pressure for the holiday to be picture-perfect. Often, what can be the most difficult about this and other holidays is when our ideas of how the day "should" be don't match the reality of how it is. I'm all for a good Hallmark movie or a beautiful Pinterest board full of holiday ideas, but let's set that aside this year. Ask yourself, "Are my expectations really serving me well?" Instead of striving for the unattainable, let's focus on the simple joys of Thanksgiving – connection, gratitude, and laughter. It's a time to cherish, not stress over. If Hallmark and Pinterest ideals are your jam and they fill your heart with joy, go for it. But for the rest of us whose main talents lie elsewhere, let's chill out.

WITH OVERALL APPROACH - Let Gratitude Light Your Way.

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. It's right there in the name of the holiday. No matter what you've been through or what your Thanksgiving situation may be this year, there's always something to be thankful for. Take a moment to reflect on the good things in your life. Shifting your focus from what's on your plate or who is at your table to the blessings in your life can make this Thanksgiving a genuinely enriching experience. Check out THIS PODCAST EPISODE for more ways to make that happen.

As you give these tips a try, remember that we're aiming for a holiday that fills your heart and soul. This is about creating a life that nourishes your body and your soul in the most delightful way possible.

This Thanksgiving, let's make it about enjoyment, nourishment, and a little extra self-love. You're on a journey to a brighter and happier relationship with food, your body, and, most importantly, yourself.

Wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and the most delicious memories.
