One Question That Could Change Your Year

As the New Year begins, there’s a natural pull to set goals, make resolutions, and dream about the future. But before diving into the details of your plans, let’s pause and ask one of the most transformative questions you can consider: What do you want?

This question might seem simple, but its power lies in how deeply it invites you to reflect on your true desires. When answered with honesty and clarity, it has the potential to shape not just your year but your life.

The Blind Beggar’s Story

In Luke 18:35-42, we encounter a blind beggar who has an extraordinary moment with Jesus. As Jesus is passing through Jericho, the man hears the commotion of the crowd and cries out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Despite being rebuked and told to be quiet, the beggar shouts even louder, capturing Jesus’ attention. Jesus stops and asks him a simple yet profound question: “What do you want me to do for you?”

The beggar’s response is direct and full of faith: “Lord, I want to see.” And with that, Jesus restores his sight, transforming the man’s life forever.

This story reminds us that clarity in naming our desires—no matter how big or small—is an act of faith and courage. It’s also a reminder that God listens to us when we bring our hearts to Him.

Why Naming Your Wants Matters

In the busyness of life, it’s easy to lose sight of what we truly want. We get caught up in daily demands, societal expectations, and even self-doubt. Yet taking the time to articulate your desires can:

  • Bring focus to your goals: When you’re clear on what you want, you can better align your actions with your priorities.

  • Reveal your values: Your desires often point to what matters most to you, helping you live with greater intention.

  • Strengthen your faith: Naming your wants invites God into your journey, fostering a deeper connection and trust in His plans.

My Personal List of Wants

Let me share a personal story that taught me what a powerful practice naming our desires can be. One summer day my 17-year-old self took the time to consider and write down a list of things I wanted to experience before I got married. It was actually kind of a prayer of hopes for things I thought would help me be more ready to commit to marriage and family. I had no idea how far in the future that might happen, but I knew what I wanted to do before it did. I didn't know then what I know now about planning and follow-through, so I simply wrote my list and closed my journal.

I honestly don't remember if I ever looked at that list again. I for sure didn't use it to form any plan for making those things happen.

Years later - after I was married - I happened upon that list that I had forgotten all about by that time, and to my surprise, all of those things had come to pass. Even without setting any specific goals or making specific plans, naming those desires shaped my journey and helped me gain clarity about the life I wanted to create.

To be clear, it's important to follow up the hopes we have with planning and well-thought-out actions. But even without those, the clarity that comes from taking the time to consider and write down our desires has a massive impact.

How to Clarify What You Want

If you’re ready to answer this powerful question, here are three steps to help:

  1. Create Quiet Space

    • Set aside time to pray, journal, or simply reflect. Focus on what you want in various areas of your life—relationships, career, health, faith, and personal growth.

  2. Be Honest and Specific

    • Allow yourself to name what you truly desire, even if it feels big, unconventional, or vulnerable.

  3. Bring Your Wants to God

    • Present your desires in prayer, asking for guidance and alignment with His will. Trust that He hears and cares about the desires of your heart.
